… winter, if that it be.

Sun shines so much I don’t know you see.

But the absence of little ones is telling to me.

Time spent in the garden used mostly to pee.

So no pix to post on this dark wintry night.

Crows only about that do take to flight.

Maybe a pic from the past is aright.

One from a world that can afright.

Time ebbs and flows, form comes and goes, how hard it sticks depends on a coupla tricks.

Tricks as in feeling for the bottom to clear out the mud, looking not thinking that settles the water, reaching with seeing to the emptiness above and beyond. Where there’s nothing to take or to give. Til the nothing I am in all things is all there is left, until …

Mark, I found your work four years ago in Mused Magazine. Your images amaze me…sometimes make me exclaim out loud. Today, I shared your work with my digital photography class in Kansas. It led to a question. How did you become interested in photographing insects? Best to you, Connie from Kansas

Hi Connie. I tripped over myself one day and landed flat on my face with camera in hand and a bug jumped in front of the lens and said in a little voice; shoot me, shoot me, take me away from this drudge of a life, I want to be famous!

Ok. :-) I was spending time in nature practicing a form of meditation, focusing on what was in front of me instead of thinking (about anything), and as time passed I spent more time in nature and less in the world and needed something to do there besides meditating. So it was born of a need, for peace of mind. It was, and is (to some degree) a means … but also an end in itself in as much as there is no trying to make of it anything it is not already, simply taking pictures of small creatures, amazing in their structure, colour and function.

Thanks Mark, that is interesting. I have always had an artistic side, and in my retirement years I want to explore photography. I appreciate your reply.

Beauty comes in many forms, the deadly spider and their spider webs.

    • Mark said, on 08/08/2014 at 12:06 pm

Sure, and when the form is gone there it is, beauty without form …

Mark, on your pictures even ugly spiders are looking beautiful. Nice winter mood sounds in your poem. Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful detailed shots Mark. Are the “heavily hipped” ones female? I have often seen these spiders but never thought they were of the same type
    ps: great poetry too :)

Thanks Maggie. Yep, that, the male is last here – long body, swollen palps.

      The ‘poeetry’, just comes natural.

A fine reflection on warmer times. I’ve been hoping for a meeting with a lynx for quite some time now, but so far they’ve eluded me. You’ve sure found some beauties!

    • Mark said, on 06/08/2014 at 10:35 am

Thanks K, they are beauties, I’m not a fly. :-) Spring is good for spiders. The lynx are ambush predators so they lie in wait, often where other flying insects eat.
