One of my favorite traits of mantises is that, from whatever angle we choose to study them, the centers of their faceted eyes look darker, so they always seem to be staring back precisely at us in return. Marvelous photo.

  Thanks k… That’s a characteristic of compound eyes, made up of conical tubes. The ones you are aligned with, to see deepest into, usually look darker than the surrounding cones. Click This for some info on it.

Insects sometimes look like biological robots to me, some of them are so efficient in their minimalist designs, and they move so precisely. This one looks quite lethal.

Quite a photo; very up close and personal. Mantises are one of my favorite insects to to photograph. In the past three years I’ve had two opportunities, one a green praying mantis the other brown. My first opportunity was about ten years ago with a very large green praying mantis. For all three occasions the insect was very patient with me and allowed for numerous photographs from a variety of angles.

  This one came to light after knocking it while watering. Then it always wanted to climb onto the lens, occasionally sitting still a few seconds – enough for a few shots.
