An other kind of fly, horse fly I think. AKA march fly in Oz. Can have a painful bite if left to it, feeding on blood.
Though they also feed on nectar this one was intent on human. They don’t give up easy.

Hover flies seem to have the biggest eyes. Sometimes you think the whole insect consists of eyes…i mean especially the ” langbauchschwebfliege” in german.
Definitely very determined when they can sense a host!
They can be. This one gave up after one try.
Nature can be cruel… ;-)
If cruelty is the deliberate infliction of pain I don’t see it in the natural things. Everything is doing what it must without premeditation.
Yikes!
Amazing photo of the eyes and ouch those kind can really bite!
They can if you’re distracted enough. It’s an exercise sometimes, to be aware of them as they land – and not react forcefully enough to kill it.
