    I think it needs the spikes to locate movement. It can hurt itself with it.

    Yes, there are people who show courage and some of them pay for it.
    I can step into a raging river, but I don’t have to be surprised if it turns out badly

      I think it uses the spikes to trap and hold prey. I suggest it would only get hurt by them if it was being attacked by something bigger that could make it so.

      If you step into a raging river chances are you’ll be swept away.
